Insights from the 2024 National College of DUI Defense Summer Session
This July, I attended the National College of DUI Defense (NCDD) Summer Session, a premier two-and-a-half-day seminar held in Newport Beach, California. The event featured some of the nation’s top DUI attorneys presenting the latest developments in DUI defense.
This year’s summer session focused on DUI trial skills, offering materials and presentations on trial techniques and practices specific to the unique challenges of DUI trials. Each day concluded with breakout sessions, allowing attendees to engage with leading DUI attorneys, practice newly acquired skills, and receive constructive critiques.
Learning to Highlight Biases in Officer Training
One of my primary goals was to deepen my understanding of challenging blood draw cases. During one breakout session, I had the opportunity to consult with Joe St. Louis, a premier Tucson DUI attorney known for his specialized knowledge in blood cases. He provided valuable insights and recommended attending the NCDD’s Serious Science seminar. Additionally, Steve Oberman, a nationally recognized DUI attorney from Knoxville, Tennessee, delivered an enlightening presentation on cross-examining police officers regarding standardized field sobriety tests (SFSTs). I learned innovative strategies to highlight biases in officer training and to leverage their training against them. Previously, I focused primarily on procedural errors in SFST administration, but this presentation equipped me with new, powerful tactics to use.
